Updated: 9 October 2026 — We have expanded this guide with a clear place-setting order, practical linen choices and ideas for everyday and special-occasion tables.

A thoughtfully set table does not need to be formal or complicated. It simply gives a meal a sense of occasion, whether you are gathering the family, welcoming friends or taking time to enjoy dinner on your own. Begin with the way the table will be used, then build the setting in layers: linen, plates, cutlery, glassware and a restrained centrepiece.

Start with the table and the occasion

Before choosing colours or decorations, consider the meal. A weekday supper needs room for serving dishes and easy conversation; a celebration may justify several courses and more glassware. Check how many guests can sit comfortably, remove anything that interrupts sightlines and leave enough space for people to move their chairs.

A linen tablecloth creates a calm, cohesive background and protects the table. Choose a drop that feels generous without reaching guests’ laps. For a more relaxed look, a linen table runner can define the centre of the table while allowing the surface beneath to remain visible.

Place plates, cutlery and glasses in a logical order

Put the dinner plate in front of each chair, roughly a thumb’s width from the table edge. Place forks to the left and knives to the right, with knife blades facing the plate. Spoons sit to the right of the knives. When serving several courses, arrange cutlery in the order it will be used, working from the outside towards the plate.

Place the water glass above the knife. Add wine glasses beside it only when they are needed. Dessert cutlery can sit above the plate or arrive with dessert. These conventions are helpful because they make the setting intuitive, but comfort matters more than rigid formality.

Use linen napkins to add colour and texture

Linen napkins make even a simple meal feel considered. Fold them into rectangles, tie them loosely with ribbon or place them directly on each plate. Matching napkins create a polished look; contrasting colours make the table feel more relaxed and personal.

Reusable linen is also a practical alternative to disposable paper napkins. Keep a few extra napkins within reach, especially when serving shared dishes or meals with children.

Choose a simple colour palette

Two or three colours are usually enough. Natural linen, white ceramics and clear glassware form a timeless foundation; seasonal colour can come from napkins, flowers, fruit or candles. Repeating one colour in several small details creates harmony without making the table look over-styled.

Mixing old and new pieces can add character. Crockery does not need to match perfectly, but repeating a shape, material or colour helps varied pieces feel intentional.

Keep the centrepiece low and practical

A centrepiece should support conversation, not block it. Use a low vase, a few bud vases, a bowl of seasonal fruit or small branches arranged along the table. Avoid heavily scented flowers beside food, and leave clear space for shared plates, bottles and serving utensils.

Candles bring warmth after dark. Place several low candles along a long table or use one modest group in the centre. Stable holders and unscented candles are the safest, most food-friendly choice.

Adapt the setting for everyday meals

You do not need a formal arrangement every day. A runner, washable napkins and a small vase can be enough to make an ordinary meal feel special. Keep frequently used table linen close to the dining area so setting the table takes minutes rather than becoming a chore.

Creases are part of linen’s relaxed character. Smooth the cloth by hand after washing and use it naturally, or iron it while slightly damp when you prefer a sharper finish. Our guide to caring for table linen explains both approaches.

A quick table-setting checklist

  • Allow comfortable space for every guest.
  • Choose a tablecloth or runner suited to the meal.
  • Set cutlery from the outside in according to the courses.
  • Place water and other glasses above the knives.
  • Add reusable linen napkins.
  • Keep flowers and candles low enough for conversation.
  • Leave room for serving dishes and shared food.

The perfect table is not the most elaborate one. It is a table that feels welcoming, works for the meal and lets the people around it relax. Explore our linen table collection for tablecloths, runners, placemats and napkins designed to be used and enjoyed for years.
