Table linen works hard: tablecloths protect surfaces, napkins handle spills and tea towels support countless kitchen tasks. With prompt stain treatment, gentle washing and dry storage, well-made linen can remain useful for many years.
Always check the item’s care label before following general advice. Dyes, finishes, embroidery and blended fabrics may need different treatment, and fragile antique linen should be assessed more cautiously.

1. Treat spills promptly
Blot a fresh spill with a clean white cloth rather than rubbing it deeper into the fibres. For water-based spills, rinse from the reverse with cool water when the care label permits. Avoid heat until the mark is gone, because high temperatures can make some stains harder to remove.
Apply a small amount of mild detergent or an appropriate stain treatment and test it first on a hidden area. Follow the product instructions and avoid chlorine bleach, which can weaken linen fibres and alter colour.

2. Soak only when appropriate
If the textile is washable, a short soak in cool or lukewarm water may help loosen a mark. Do not automatically use hot water: heat can set protein-based stains and may affect colour or cause shrinkage.
Use a clean container large enough for the fabric to move freely. Do not leave coloured or embellished linen soaking unattended, and stop if dye begins to run.
3. Wash gently
Machine wash on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, or wash by hand without scrubbing, twisting or wringing. Separate light and dark colours and avoid overloading the machine so the linen can rinse properly.
Before drying, inspect the stained area in good light. If the mark remains, repeat a suitable treatment rather than exposing it to high heat.
4. Dry with moderate heat
Air drying is a good option when space and weather allow. Shake the linen gently, arrange it in its natural shape and keep strongly coloured pieces away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade dyes.
If the care label permits tumble drying, choose a low temperature and remove the item while it is still slightly damp. Finish drying on a line or flat, depending on the product and available space.
5. Store linen clean and dry
Store table linen only when it is completely dry. Fold or roll larger pieces loosely in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from damp, direct light and untreated wood. Avoid sealed plastic for long-term storage because trapped moisture can encourage mildew.
For candle wax, allow it to harden and lift away what you can without pulling the fibres. Heat-and-paper methods can spread dyes or damage finishes, so consult the care label and test cautiously; valuable or delicate pieces are safest with a textile-care professional.

Hi Jill,
It is always very difficult to comment on the products of other manufactures. I have couple of assumptions why they are giving this tip. It could be that they suggest that to make the fabric softer (we sell all our LinenMe tablecloths as prewashed, so you won't need to go through this procedure with LinenMe product). Another reason might be that they want to brighten/protect the colour of the fabric due to dying techniques the manufacture uses. The best would be to check with them directly.
Regards,
Inga
Good job, useful tips.
